General Tso Chicken Recipe

Ingredients
1 onion, cut in half crosswise and then Into 16 thin wedges
1 egg
1 lb boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into large chunks
1 tbsp soy sauce
3 cups broccoli florets
1⁄2 cup cornstarch
1 sweet red pepper, cut into strips long grain rice, cooked according to package directions
2 cups canola oll
For General Tso sauce: 1½ tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp honey
1½ tsp rice vinegar
1½ tsp chili garlic sauce
¼ cup chicken broth
1 tsp cornstarch
½ clove garlic, minced
½ tsp fresh ginger, grated
Directions

General Tso Sauce:

Step 1: Make the General Tso sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, chili garlic sauce, chicken broth, and cornstarch until smooth.

Step 2: Pour into a small saucepan over medium heat.

Step 3: Add the garlic and ginger, stirring to combine.

Step 4: Simmer for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.

Step 5: Remove from heat, and let it cool down.

 

Chicken:

Step 6: In a large bowl, whisk together egg, soy sauce and 1 tbsp General Tso sauce. Whisk in cornstarch until well combines and liquefied.

Step 7: Stir in chicken pieces until well coated.

Step 8: In a wok over high heat, heat oil until very hot, about 350°F.

Step 9: In batches, add chicken pieces.

Step 10: Cook for 1 to 2 mins per batch, until the chicken is brown and crunchy.

Step 11: Using tongs, transfer to paper towels to drain.

Step 12: Repeat until all of the chicken is done.

Step 13: Drain oil from wok, leaving 2 tbsp in wok.

Step 14: Add onion; stir-fry for 2 mins.

Step 15: Stir in broccoli, red pepper and ½ cup water.

Step 16: Cover and steam for 4 to 5 mins or until broccoli is bright green and tender-crisp.

Step 17: Stir in remaining General Tso sauce, cook, stirring, for 1 min until vegetables are well coated and sauce has begun to simmer.

Step 18: Stir in chicken until well coated and heated through, about 1 min.

Step 19: Serve on top of rice.
